Our Story

Who is Laseriginals™?

The company is owned and operated by Nikita Prokhorov, a graphic designer who merged his love for letters and branding with engineering and product design.

Background

The Laseriginals™ story began long before Nikita became a graphic designer or owned a laser cutter. It actually started when he was a child. After school, Nikita would watch his grandfather work—his grandfather was, after all, an architect and artist who worked before the era of computers and software, building all his models by hand from wood or paper. (The photo you see below is one of his original models and it’s at least forty years old.)

Watching him work and seeing his architectural models come to life helped shaped Nikita’s spatial thinking. It also encouraged him to work with his hands, which translated into a career as a graphic designer. As a student, Nikita loved diving in and making certain aspects of his design projects out of paper, wood, metal, or any other material he could get his hands on.

That is the foundation Laseriginals™ was built upon.

INSPIRATION

The inspiration for Laseriginals™ can be found below the surface of the ocean. One year, Nikita was scuba diving in the Caribbean. Although there was little marine life, there was plenty of coral. He was enamored by the diversity of the shapes and textures, thinking to himself “Hey, this would look pretty cool as a product of some kind!”

Those thoughts continued on all of Nikita’s dives. And when he returned home, he picked up a pencil and started to sketch some rough ideas. The first few sketching sessions were strictly about getting all of the ideas on paper and seeing what happens—i.e. pure exploration. As he continued sketching and exploring ideas in the coming months, Nikita noticed that an arts and culture website published an article on Ernst Haeckel, a German biologist and illustrator whose sketches showed how different plant life appeared under his microscope. His sketches were colorful and intricate—their complexity took the spark of inspiration that ignited underwater and fanned it into a creative inferno.

The inspiration for Laseriginals began underwater - and has continued to provide inspiration since then.

What it has become

Laseriginals products are developed with a simple mission in mind—to create products that are easy to ship and assemble, with a focus on function and aesthetic, all while leaving a small ecological footprint. Every product is engineered, designed, prototyped, and built from scratch. Each piece of wood used for the products is slightly different, making each product a true original.

Whether you’re buying a limited-edition lamp or a minimalist pencil holder, each product is unique.
